Manchester City officially brought in Gianluigi Donnarumma this Tuesday. The 26-year-old Italian goalkeeper comes from PSG. He played there for the past four seasons. Donnarumma signed a five-year deal, keeping him at City until 2030. Sky Sports reports the tall 1.96-meter keeper cost the Premier League club nearly 30 million euros. This is a big move for the reigning champions.
Donnarumma himself couldn’t hide his excitement. “Signing for Manchester City feels incredibly special,” he said. “I’m so proud to be here. This team is full of world-class players. We are led by Pep Guardiola, one of football’s greatest coaches. It’s a club every player dreams of joining.” He added, “I’ve watched Manchester City for years. Now, getting to play here is a huge honor. It’s truly a privilege. I can’t wait to meet my new teammates. I’m also eager to greet the coaching staff and the fans. Playing at the Etihad will be a unique experience for me. I’m really pumped for what’s ahead. I promise to give absolutely everything. I want to help the club win even more trophies.”
Hugo Viana, City’s sporting director, was just as thrilled about the new arrival. “Gianluigi’s history and amazing quality speak volumes,” Viana stated. “We are absolutely buzzing to have him at City. He brings huge experience from the top level. He knows exactly how to win titles again and again. It’s rare for a goalkeeper to play at the highest level so young. He arrives as one of the best shot-stoppers in the world. There’s no doubt Gianluigi will boost our goalkeeping options even more. Everyone here is happy to welcome him. We wish him all the very best in this new journey with Manchester City.”
Donnarumma steps into big shoes. Ederson, City’s main keeper for seasons, recently left the club. Now, the Italian star will battle for the starting spot. He’ll face competition from James Trafford and Stefan Ortega. The competition will surely push everyone to their best. It sets up an interesting dynamic for the upcoming season.
