It’s been a while since the case of Miracles Chamorro, a 29-year-old who was a victim of group violence back in 2010, when he was just 14, made headlines. Now, the Prosecutor’s Office of Maldonado has decided to reopen the investigation – and it’s about time, if you ask me. Witnesses are being questioned, and all this was confirmed by Santiago Mirande, the lawyer for the Milagros family. It seems there were some pretty important evidence proceedings that were never completed back then, like getting statements from witnesses who saw what happened and accessing any audio or video footage from that night, September 17, 2010.
Reexamining the Evidence
The lawyers representing the family felt that these loose ends needed to be tied up, so they asked the Prosecutor to take another look at the case. This isn’t the first time they’ve tried, by the way – two previous prosecutors had already shelved the case. But now, it seems like there’s finally some movement. For instance, the family’s legal team has been pushing for the testimony of key witnesses who were present on the night of the incident, which could provide crucial insights into what actually happened. Moreover, they’ve been seeking access to audiovisual material that might have captured the events leading up to the violent incident.
A Tragic End
It’s worth noting that Milagros Chamorro’s story took a devastating turn when he took his own life on October 25, 2024. He hanged himself with his scarf in an emergency box at CASMU, after trying to get help from a specialist three times. The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) launched an administrative investigation after his death, which uncovered some serious failures in the way he was cared for. Those findings were passed on to the Prosecutor’s Office, leading to a criminal complaint against CASMU, a doctor, and some other institutions for not providing adequate care and failing to follow mental health protocols. I mean, can you imagine how his family must feel, knowing that he didn’t get the help he needed? It’s heartbreaking, to say the least. The question on everyone’s mind is, could this tragedy have been prevented if the system had worked as it should have? Only time, and hopefully a thorough investigation, will tell.
