Maldonado Police Officer Surrenders After 15-Hour Standoff, Taken to Sanatorium for Assistance

A 46-year-old police officer held authorities at bay for 15 hours on Tuesday before surrendering to negotiators at his home in Maldonado’s Biarritz neighborhood. The standoff began when someone called 911 to report that the officer had tried to take his own life. Police arrived to find the man, a corporal with the Maldonado Police Department, was alone and unharmed inside. The negotiators, from Montevideo’s Republican Guard, worked through the night to persuade him to give himself up.

The officer’s ordeal reportedly stemmed from personal struggles. He had recently split from his partner and was notified that part of his pay would be withheld to support his family. These stressors likely contributed to his crisis. Police sources revealed the officer works in the URPM, the Response Police Area for Zone 4, covering José Ignacio and La Barra. He’s also a professor, balancing two demanding roles.

Resolution and Aftermath

Police kept a safe distance, avoiding a forced entry. The successful negotiation was a relief to all involved. Once the officer surrendered, his service weapon was confiscated, and he was taken to a San Carlos hospital for mental health support. His family was with him, and police maintained a visible presence. The incident highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel, who are often expected to manage their own problems while serving the public. Authorities managed to de-escalate the situation without anyone getting hurt.

The officers on the scene included Jorge Guerra, Maldonado Police deputy chief, and Mauricio Sánchez, director of Executive Coordination. Their presence underscored the seriousness with which the situation was treated. The outcome was a testament to the effectiveness of careful negotiation over confrontation.
