The film “Khalid Ka Shivaji” is at the center of a big debate right now. Its release is currently on hold. This Marathi-language movie was set to hit theaters on August 8. However, the Maharashtra state government has asked the central government to take a second look at its clearance certificate.
The Maharashtra government sent a letter to the Central Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. This letter asked them to re-examine the film’s CBFC certificate. It also requested that the movie’s release stay paused until a decision is made. Kiran Kulkarni, the Culture Secretary of Maharashtra, sent this official letter on August 6.
Why the Controversy?
The request from Maharashtra’s government comes after several right-wing groups spoke out against the film. These groups claim the movie presents the history of the great Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, incorrectly. They are worried that releasing the film might cause public order issues.
The government’s letter mentions a written complaint received on August 5. This complaint came from Nilesh Bhise, a right-wing activist. He watched the film’s trailer and stated that some lines in it were not true. He felt these dialogues could hurt people’s feelings.
Protests Erupt
Just recently, during a state film awards event in Mumbai, protesters gathered. They demanded that “Khalid Ka Shivaji” be banned completely. Others asked that the problematic dialogues be removed from the film.
