French cyclist Paul Magnier, 19, capped a remarkable season by winning five of six stages at the Tour of Guangxi, securing his position as one of professional cycling’s most successful riders this year.
Magnier, riding for Soudal Quick-Step, clinched his 19th victory of the season by prevailing in a sprint finish during Sunday’s final stage in Nanning, China. The 134.3-kilometer leg marked his dominance throughout the Chinese race.
He reinforced his standing as the second most victorious cyclist of the season, trailing only the formidable Tadej Pogacar. Magnier closed his season with only one fewer win than Pogacar.
Poland’s Stanislaw Aniolkowski of Cofidis finished second in the final stage. French compatriot Paul Penhoët, representing Groupama-FDJ, took third place.
Paul Double, a British rider from Jayco AlUla, was confirmed as the overall winner of the Tour of Guangxi.
While Magnier’s wins are impressive for a young rider, Pogacar’s victories include world and European road titles, the Tour de France, Critérium du Dauphiné, Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Flèche Wallonne, and his fifth Tour of Lombardy.
Portuguese cyclist Ivo Oliveira of UAE Emirates finished fifth in the final stage, recording the same time as Magnier. Oliveira concluded the general classification in 45th place.
His twin brother and Olympic champion, Rui Oliveira, also with UAE Emirates, placed 61st in the stage.
