Magistrate suggests dismissing lawsuit against Cristiano Ronaldo

A Nevada magistrate agreed with Cristiano Ronaldo’s lawyers in the case of a woman who had filed a lawsuit to pay her more than the $ 375,000 she received in a confidentiality agreement after claiming that the international soccer star called her. had raped in Las Vegas.

In a recommendation to the judge in the case, Federal Magistrate Daniel Albregts held Kathryn Mayorga’s attorney, Leslie Mark Stovall, responsible Wednesday for having based the matter on leaked and stolen documents.

According to Albregts, those documents contained privileged communications between the Portuguese soccer player and his lawyers.

“Dismissing Mayorga’s case for her attorney’s misconduct is a severe result,” Albregts wrote in his recommendation to Federal Judge Jennifer Dorsey. “But, unfortunately, it is the only adequate sanction to guarantee the integrity of the judicial process.”

The date when Judge Dorsey would receive Albregts’s recommendation had not been set at the moment.

“Stovall has acted in bad faith to the detriment of his client and his profession,” Albregts noted.

Stovall and other attorneys at his office did not immediately respond to requests by phone and in their emails for comment on Albregts’ decision.

Cristiano’s Las Vegas attorney, Peter Christiansen, said in a statement that the soccer player’s legal team was “pleased with the detailed review made by the court… and its willingness to duly apply the law to the facts and recommend that it be dismiss the civil case against Mr. Ronaldo ”.

The Associated Press generally does not identify individuals who claim to have been victims of sexual assault by name, but Mayorga consented through Stovall and attorney Larissa Drohobyczer for her name to be mentioned.

Albregts stressed that the court did not make any decision on whether Cristiano committed any crime and did not find evidence that the player’s lawyers and representatives had “intimidated Mayorga or prevented the application of the law” when she dropped the criminal charges and concluded an agreement to confidentiality for $ 375,000 in August 2010.

The 36-year-old currently plays for the Premier League club Manchester United, where he had played at the beginning of his international career.
