Magic Kingdom was the most visited theme park in the world in 2022

Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park, located in central Florida (USA), was the most visited in the world in 2022, after adding some 17.13 million visitors, according to a report released this Wednesday. .

The Themed Entertainment Association/AECOM report reflects that the figure for 2022 represents an increase of 35% compared to the previous yearalthough it is still missing to match the 21 million visitors of 2019, the year before the pandemic.

The document emphasizes, however, that no theme park in the world has yet managed to return to pre-pandemic figures.

The second place on this list is occupied by Disneyland, in California, which recorded 16.88 million visitorsa number that reflects an increase compared to the previous year of 97%, and in third position is Universal Studios Japan, which added 12.35 million (125% more than 2021).

Tokyo Disneyland, with 12 million (90% increase), and Universal Islands of Adventure, in Orlando and which made 11.02 million (21%), were located in fourth and fifth place, respectively, among the most visited theme parks. of the world.

The study reflects that Florida is the undisputed world capital of theme parks, putting six parks among the first fifteen positions, which together gathered 68.8 million visitors during 2022, followed at a distance by the three main Californian parks that they recorded 35.2 million visitors.

Universal Islands of Adventure was ranked as the third most visited park in the United States and thus beat out the other three Disney World parks in Florida, such as Hollywood Studios (10.9 million), EPCOT (10 million) and Magic Kingdom (9.03 million).

As reported by local media, Magic Kingdom primacy will likely be certified in 2023 accountingwhich will take into account the opening last April of the TRON Lightcycle Run attraction.

Disney remains the master of the sector by placing seven (two of them in Japan) in the list of the ten most visited parks in the world, according to the report.

Likewise, the United States is home to the seven most visited parks in the world, five of them owned by Disney and two by Universal.

The report, considered the benchmark for the sector, highlights that the parks and attractions industry as a whole continues to recover from the effects of the pandemic and that the gains in attendance figures were due to the relaxation of restrictions imposed by covid-19 and “cumulative demand”.

This study is released in the midst of the fight that Disney maintains with the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, who is a Republican candidate for the Presidency of 2024 and with whom he is in court litigation.

The conflict broke out when one of its directors criticized the law that prohibits addressing issues of gender identity and sexual orientation in Florida schools, standard known to its detractors as “Don’t say gay”.

In response, DeSantis signed a law that ended the self-governance Disney had enjoyed in Florida for more than 50 years and created a new board with members chosen by him.
