The Formula Kite World Championship in Sardinia, Italy, is a relentless test. Olympic sailor Mafalda Pires de Lima showed incredible consistency today. She held onto her ninth-place spot for the third day in a row. It’s a solid run in a tough field, proving her mettle on the water.
Pires de Lima navigated today’s races with a determined spirit. She finished fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth in the individual heats. These steady results bring her total points to 81. Her consistent performance keeps her firmly in the hunt as the competition heats up.
At the top of the women’s fleet, Dutch sailor Jessie Kampman remains dominant. She has led since day one and currently holds 19 points. French Olympic vice-champion Lauriane Nolot is still in second place with 38 points. British sailor Lily Young moved up to grab the third spot on the podium, collecting 55 points. The top eight women after Saturday’s races will battle it out Sunday in successive elimination heats. This includes quarterfinals, semifinals, and the big final.
While Mafalda held strong, her brother Tomás Pires de Lima faced a challenging day. Competing in the gold fleet, reserved for the top 25 sailors, he saw his ranking drop. Tomás fell four positions to 21st overall. He posted finishes of 13th, 16th, 20th, and 21st. The 21st place finish was discarded from his score. He now sits with 124 points, looking to bounce back.
The men’s competition saw a significant shake-up in the standings. Italy’s Riccardo Pianosi reclaimed the lead with 23 points. He moved past Singapore’s Maximilam Maeder, the Paris 2024 bronze medalist. Maeder had a rough day, falling to fourth place with 33 points. Switzerland’s Gian Stragioti climbed one position to second with 31 points. Slovenian Toni Vodjsek, the current Olympic vice-champion, made a big move. He entered the provisional podium for the first time, now in third place also with 31 points. The battle for the top spots remains tight and unpredictable.
