Madrid responds with punch

After a European double day and a resounding defeat, like the one on Friday at the Partizán court (104-90, the biggest of the season), there is always the question of how it will affect the team, what the reaction will be. The setback in Belgrade, yes, was not important for the objectives in the Euroleague and the Madrid responded very well in the ACB, against Covirán Granada, with the highest score of the season (108-75) just a day and a half after the continental clash with a very early morning flight included.

individually highlighted Vincent Poirier (21 points and 7 rebounds) and Mario Hezonja (18+5 and 4 assists for a PIR of 27), El Chacho distributed 8 passesTavares racked up 18 credits in just 12:32 on the floor and Causeur and Cornelie looked good. What must be underlined, however, is that the whites showed cohesion, shared the ball wonderfully and completed a very serious first half (59-37), very passing (17 assists, the same in 20 minutes as the ones he averaged per day), with many hands pushing and a high success (75% of two and 50% of three), and when they didn’t score… there was the rebound, where they doubled and something more to his rival.

and all in a special day, that of the return of Anthony Randolph33 years old, to the courts after two very serious injuries in the last three seasonsthe most recent, a chilling injury to the left knee (torn anterior cruciate ligament) in the last League final, of which 293 days are fulfilled this Sunday (9 months, 2 weeks and 6 days). He hadn’t played since. An important piece in recent merengue history returns, an American who chains seven seasons at the club (only surpassed by Jaycee Carroll, 2011-21, and equaled by Walter Szczerbiak, 1973-80, and Trey Thompkins, 2015-22) to stack already 305 games. He entered the scene at the end of the first quarter and, as players who have been out of action for a long time often do, he exhibited marksmanship for hours and hours of shooting practice. In his first seven minutes on the track, until he went to the bench, he scored his 8 points (two triples). In total, 17:56 of action, 8+8 rebounds and a feeling of revengeof recovery work completed after more than a month exercising with his colleagues and eight others alone.

Perhaps Covirán Granada lacked more competitive nerve at the start, because between the fact that it was not a match of his league and saw that the locals put everything in… something softened. The two victories in their three previous matches (three in a row at home) had also given them an important cushion of three wins ahead of Betis in their race to save themselves. He showed a more challenging version at the start of the second half, even forcing Chus Mateo to call a timeout after a 12-19 (71-56) run. Renfroe had a good performancewithout losing face to the duel. Madrid picked up again and added 37 goals (until the final 108) in the remaining 14 minutes with Hezonja wearing a little hand. The Croatian forward, cheered on Friday by the Serbian fans of Partizan at the Stark Arena, is going through a good moment.
