Pop star Madonna has acquired a Bored Ape non-fungible token (NFT) worth more than half a million dollars.
Madonna buys Bored Ape #4988
The 63-year-old singer said Thursday evening in a Instagram post that she had “entered the metaverse” by purchasing Bored Ape #4988.
In the post, she thanked MoonPay, a crypto payment outfit that has been buying big ticket NFTs on behalf of celebrities since late last year.
Transaction data on OpenSea, the NFT marketplace, shows that MoonPay purchased Madonna’s Bored Ape for 180 Ethereum (about $564,000) last week. The company then transferred the piece to a wallet two days ago. This is presumably the property of Madonna.
Soon after, MoonPay transferred Bored Ape #1506 to another wallet. That item — a leopard-haired primate with an eye patch — has since become rapper Wiz Khalifa’s Twitter profile picture.
The new statements of support come at a busy time for Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection. It just released a new token. Yuga labs is preparing to launch a metaverse gaming project, in addition to announcing a $450 million investment from venture capital backers earlier this week.
