Machado hits two homers, Padres beat Marlins 2-1

Manny Machado, one of the most in-form sluggers in the majors, hit two impressive home runs, Nick Martinez pitched seven solid innings and the San Diego Padres beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 on Thursday.

The third baseman’s two $300 million homers were off Miami starter Jesus Luzardo. Machado knocked it out of the park to center field with two outs in the first inning and in the fourth, also with one out, he sent the ball into the second amphitheater from left field.

Martinez (2-2) limited the Marlins to one run on four hits in seven innings, striking out four and giving up one walk. Taylor Rogers pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances so far this season.

Luzardo (2-2) took the loss after allowing two runs and three hits in six innings in which he struck out seven opposing batters and walked three.

For the Marlins, Venezuelans Jesús Aguilar 4-1 with one produced; Avisail Garcia 2-0; Miguel Rojas 3-1, with a run scored. Cuban Jorge Soler 4-0. The Dominican Jesus Sanchez 4-0.

For the Padres, Colombian Jorge Alfaro 2-1.
