Manny Machado broke a tie with a sixth-inning double, and the San Diego Padres held their own to beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 Tuesday on an emotional night, hours after discovering that their manager, Bob Melvin will have to undergo prostate surgery on Wednesday.

San Diego closer Taylor Rogers gave up Ian Happ’s RBI single with two outs in the ninth and loaded the bases before pinch hitter Frank Schwindel threw a long ball to left field that was caught by Jurickson Profar in the Wall. It was Rogers’ 12th save in 13 chances.

Steve Wilson (3-0) got the win while Robert Gsellman (0-1) took the loss.

The Cubs had tied it 2-2 in the third inning thanks to a home run by Alfonso Rivas that ricocheted off the glove of rookie center fielder José Azocar and cleared the fence.

For the Cubs, Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 4-2, with a run scored; Ildemaro Vargas 0-0, with one scored; Willson Contreras 3-2. Dominican Jonathan Villar 4-1.

For the Padres, Venezuelan José Azocar 4-0.
