Luka Doncic’s Mid-Season Integration with Lakers Compared to Building a Plane in Flight

The Los Angeles Lakers’ early exit from the NBA playoffs has sparked a flurry of activity behind the scenes.
After their home loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, coach JJ Redick and General Manager Rob Pelinka spoke to the press.
Pelinka addressed the team’s mid-season trade for Luka Doncic, saying it was like “building a plane while flying it.”
He acknowledged the challenges of swapping a key post player for a point guard, noting it created problems.
A top priority this summer will be adding size to the frontcourt, Pelinka said, citing the Timberwolves’ dominance in the paint with Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert.

The team’s struggles in the post were a major issue, and Pelinka is already looking ahead to the offseason.
“There will be a lot of opportunities to pursue, and I’m excited,” he said, emphasizing that the organization is in sync with LeBron James.
Pelinka also praised Redick’s energy and spirit in his first season as coach.
Redick, in turn, highlighted his instant connection with Doncic, which dated back to their time together on the Dallas Mavericks in 2022.
“He told me he wants to be coached and held accountable,” Redick said. “He expects me to bring out the best version of him – preferably one that wins championships.”
The Lakers won’t be back on the court until October, giving them plenty of time to regroup and recharge before the new season.
