Luka Doncic has spoken out for the first time since the transfer that has sent shockwaves through the Lakers and the entire basketball world. The Slovenian player has written a heartfelt letter titled “Dear Dallas,” expressing his gratitude for the love and support he has received from the franchise, the city, and the fans since his arrival in 2018. In the letter, he says: “Seven years ago, I came here as a teenager to pursue my dream of playing basketball at the highest level. I thought my career would happen here and I wanted to bring you a championship. The love and support that all of you have given me is more than I could have ever dreamed.
For a young man from Slovenia who came to the United States for the first time, you made the north of Texas feel like my home. In the good and bad times, from the injuries to the NBA finals, your support never changed. Thanks not only for sharing my joy in our best moments, but also for getting up when I needed it most. As Luka Doncic, the new Lakers player, put it: “Thanks not only for sharing my joy in our best moments, but also for getting up when I needed it most.”
He also thanked the organizations he has worked with in the Dallas community, saying: “To all the organizations with which I have worked throughout the community of Dallas, thanks for allowing me to contribute to your important work and join you to bring light to those who need it. At the beginning of the next part of my journey in the world of basketball, I leave a city that I will always feel like a home away from my home.” Doncic went on to say that “Dallas is a special place and MAV fans are special.” He concluded his letter by saying: “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”
His former colleagues in the Mavericks have responded to Doncic’s post, expressing how much they will miss him and the satisfaction they felt playing with him.
