The Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez confirmed this Wednesday his return to Nacional de Montevideo after waiting for offers from Europe and having been one step away from River Plate, with the aim of adding minutes for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. “Now yes, officially! A I’m proud to wear my shirt again at Nacional. Thank you all for the support! See you soon,” the striker wrote on Twitter.
Until now, the “Gunman” had a pre-agreement, as he told in a video broadcast on his social networks, after the meeting in Madrid with the president of Nacional, José Fuentes.
Suárez, 35, was released from Atlético de Madrid after two seasons. The attacker waited until the last moment for an offer from big European teams but ended up leaning towards returning to the club that saw him born footballingly and of which he is a declared fan.
The attacker won two Uruguayan First Division titles with Nacional but at the age of 19 he left for the Netherlands to wear the Eredivisie shirt of FC Groningen. He then went on to Ajax, Liverpool, from England, Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, in the Old Continent.
His time in Barcelona made him one of the best Uruguayan soccer players in history, he formed a historic trident with the Brazilian Neymar and his friend Lionel Messi. Together they displayed great football and won the Spanish League five times, a UEFA Champions League, a Club World Cup, four King’s Cups and two Spanish Super Cups.
In addition, in his career he added another Spanish League with Atlético de Madrid in 2020-21, the Netherlands League and Cup with Ajax, and the English League Cup with Liverpool.
In the Uruguayan national team, he is the top scorer, with 68 goals, and also gave him the 2011 Copa América title in Argentina and led the team to the historic world semifinal in South Africa 2010.
Suárez’s idea is to add minutes to arrive in good physical shape at the Qatar World Cup, which may be the last for him and a large part of the generation such as Diego Godín, Edison Cavani, among others.
