Luis Castillo strikes out 10 to lead the Mariners in the shutout of the Pirates

Luis Castillo struck out 10 over six brilliant innings, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 on Saturday.

The Dominican allowed one hit — a double by Venezuelan Tucupita Marcano on the first pitch of the game — and walked two. It was the right-hander’s second straight victory since he lost back-to-back starts.

Gabe Speier, Matt Brash, Trevor Gott and Justin Topa then combined to cover three innings of one-hit ball for Seattle.

The Mariners backed Castillo (4-2) with three runs in the first inning and one in the second. Ty France hit an RBI double and scored on a single as Eugenio Suarez tried to stop his swing.

Julio Rodríguez added an RBI double in the second act.

For the Pirates, the Venezuelan Marcano 4-1. Dominicans Carlos Santana 4-0, Rodolfo Castro 1-0.

For the Mariners, Dominicans Rodríguez 4-2 with a run scored and produced, Teoscar Hernández 4-1 with an RBI. Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez 3-1 with a run scored and two RBIs. Panamanian José Caballero 4-1.
