Lucas Lopes Climbs to 18th in Tour de l’Avenir General Classification

Portuguese cyclist Lucas Lopes made a significant move on Thursday, climbing to 18th place overall at the Tour de l’Avenir. This exciting jump happened after a brutal fifth stage. Belgian rider Jarno Widar took the stage win, while France’s Maxime Decomble kept his grip on the leader’s jersey.

Widar truly owned what was called the “queen stage.” He crossed the finish line alone in Tignes 2100. This came after a grueling 212-kilometer journey that started in Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc. Widar finished in 3 hours, 34 minutes, and 48 seconds. French rider Paul Seixas and Norwegian Jorgen Nordhagen both trailed by just five seconds, finishing second and third, respectively. Lucas Lopes also showed his grit, taking 11th place on the stage, finishing 1 minute and 9 seconds behind Widar.

In the overall standings, Maxime Decomble still leads the pack. He now holds a 51-second advantage over his countryman Paul Seixas, who was the race’s first leader. Italian rider Lorenzo Finn sits 54 seconds back from Decomble. Lucas Lopes’ strong finish helped him move up to 18th overall. He is now 2 minutes and 24 seconds behind the leader.

Not all Portuguese riders had a smooth day. Daniel Lima did not even start the fifth stage. Rafael Barbas moved up to 43rd place, now 19 minutes and 14 seconds behind. Gonçalo Tavares also improved, reaching 51st place, 22 minutes and 33 seconds off the pace. João Martins, however, dropped to 89th place, sitting 34 minutes and 29 seconds behind the leader.

The 61st edition of the Tour de l’Avenir, a key event for under-23 riders, wraps up on Friday. The final day promises a double dose of action. Riders will first tackle a 41.6-kilometer route. It starts and ends in La Rosière, featuring one special category mountain climb, a first-category climb, and a third-category climb right at the finish. Following that, a challenging 10.3-kilometer uphill time trial awaits.
