Lucas Lopes 22nd, Best Portuguese in Tour de l’Avenir Prologue

The 61st Tour de l’Avenir kicked off in Tignes, France, with a grueling three-kilometer uphill prologue. This race is a big deal, often called the “Tour de France of the future” for U23 riders. Young Portuguese cyclist Lucas Lopes showed his grit, finishing as the top rider from his country. He crossed the line in 22nd place, a strong start for the team.

Lopes, who recently won the youth classification at the Volta a Portugal, is also the U23 national time trial champion. He tackled the steep climb, which ended on a third-category mountain, finishing 29 seconds behind the day’s winner. That winner was Paul Seixas, a French rider with Portuguese roots. Seixas dominated the short course, clocking an impressive 7 minutes and 19 seconds.

The battle for the top spot was incredibly tight. Italy’s Lorenzo Finn, the junior world time trial champion, came in just seven-tenths of a second slower than Seixas. Austria’s Marco Schrettl rounded out the podium, seven seconds behind the leader. These young talents are truly pushing the limits of the sport.

Other Portuguese riders also fought hard on the challenging course:

  • Daniel Moreira, the U23 national champion, finished 38th, 40 seconds back.
  • Daniel Lima secured 44th place, trailing by 43 seconds.
  • Rafael Barbas came in 71st, one minute behind.
  • Gonçalo Tavares was 95th, 1 minute and 19 seconds off the pace.
  • João Martins finished 156th, 2 minutes and 31 seconds back.

The race is far from over, though. On Sunday, the peloton faces the first full stage of this U23 Nations Cup event. Riders will cover 188.6 kilometers, traveling from Aoste to Saint-Galmier. It promises to be another test of endurance and strategy for these promising athletes.
