Loophole prevents police officers in California from issuing tickets to self-driving vehicles

Self-driving cars aren't on our roads yet, but they're pretty common in California.

Thanks to a loophole in California law, it is now possible Police officers cannot punish self-driving vehicles. since the law requires a fine to be imposed on the driver behind the wheel. According to NBC News, police have received an order exempting autonomous vehicles from fines if there is no driver behind the wheel when, for example, they exceed the speed limit on the road.

This is one of those cases where Technology has evolved faster than government legislation. Other states, such as Texas and Arizona, where self-driving vehicles also operate normally, have adjusted their laws to hold the companies that operate such vehicles responsible for traffic violations.

Some studies claim that these vehicles are less likely to commit violations and be involved in accidents. However, a GM-owned company called Cruise recently had to recall its robotaxi fleet in San Francisco after a pedestrian was dragged several feet under one of its vehicles after being hit by another vehicle and driver.
