Looks like Netflix wants to end account sharing

Sharing Netflix passwords has been a widespread practice since the early days of the streaming service. Netflix knows and tolerates this, or at least for years.

In mid-March 2021, some Netflix users encountered a warning screen when trying to log in.

The app encouraged them to open their own Netflix accounts instead of using someone else’s account and offered account verification options in case the person who saw the notice was the account owner. The test is not over and sharing passwords is still a reality.

Now Looks at that Users in Italy are seeing a similar warning screen targeted at people who share Netflix passwords.

The reports detail the same warning some users saw when trying to access their Netflix accounts earlier this year. This is a translation of what the Netflix login message says:

If you don’t live with the account holder, you need your own account to continue watching Netflix. Is it your account? We will send you a verification code.

If Netflix stops password sharing, would see significant opposition from users. As much as password sharing hurts your results, cracking down on password sharing can hurt even more.

However, the warning message appears to be designed to do just that. Perhaps Netflix wants users to stop sharing passwords with people outside the home. Hope not.
