Logue and Laureano contribute to A’s shutout of Detroit

Zach Logue pitched effectively for seven innings in his second start in the majors, and the Oakland Athletics spoiled Joey Wentz’s debut by blowing out the Detroit Tigers 9-0 on Wednesday.

Sean Murphy and Kevin Smith drove in two runs apiece. Panamanian Christian Bethancourt contributed with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI for the A’s.

Ramon Laureano reached base three times, scored two runs and drove in another.

The A’s, who entered Detroit on a nine-game losing streak, are 3-1 in the five-game series. The Tigers have lost eight of their last nine games, scoring two runs or fewer in each of those losses.

Logue (2-1) limited Detroit to five hits, did not walk and struck out six.

Oakland punished Wentz for six runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings of his first game in the majors.

Miguel Cabrera led the Tigers with three hits.

For the Athletics, the Dominicans Laureano 3-1 with two runs scored, Cristian Pache 3-1. Panamanian Bethancourt 5-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Venezuelan Elvis Andrus 3-2 with a run scored.

For the Tigres, Puerto Ricans Javier Báez 4-1, Willi Castro 4-0. The Dominican Jeimer Candelario 4-1. the Venezuelan Cabrera 4-3.
