The Covid-19 epidemic is ravaging Cuba, with more than 5,500 deaths. There are almost 9,000 new cases a day, a number that is not decreasing as theHospitals are saturated. In this context, the country preferred to delay the start of the school year, which it’s not scheduled until mid-November. To ensure that children can return to school safely, the Cuban government has decided to start immunizing them. Dsince September 3rd.

Some schools, closed to students, thus became vaccination posts for the youngest. Adolescents from 12 to 18 years old are vaccinated first, then from September 15th it will be the younger ones, from 2 years old onwards. Cuba wants to go fast and become the first country to immunize all its children. Authorities expect this to be done in mid-November, while Cuba is lagging behind in its immunization forecasts: only 35% of the population is fully vaccinated so far.

Unlike France, vaccination is not a topic of debate in Cuba and the population trusts the Abdala and Sovereign vaccines, developed in state laboratories and approved by the health authorities for emergency use in all areas. Cubans are therefore generally in favor of vaccinating younger people, especially as some hope it will allow them to return more quickly to a normal life.

In this normal life, children have been deprived of it for months, since they haven’t been to school since March 2020. Schools reopened just a few weeks at the end of last year, but closed immediately with the increase in Covid cases. While waiting to organize a real return to school, the Ministry of Education has organized courses on television, but parents are far from convinced by this method. “VSClasses are really bad, kids are falling behind in the programs, “ witness Yoanna, mother of a family who met franceinfo in Havana.

Television classes only last half an hour per subject and per level, which makes them very difficult to follow. Many children, as well as their parents, simply gave up and Cuban children accumulate a considerable delay in their studies. After health, education is now the second pillar of the Cuban revolution, which is badly shaken.
