Lionel Scaloni, Argentina’s national team coach, supports the World Cup every two years

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni spoke out in favor of FIFA’s proposal to hold the World Cup every two years.

Although the initiative promoted by coach Arsene Wenger, current head of global football development at FIFA, has not gone down well in Europe and South America, Scaloni said on Wednesday that the change “may be a benefit due to player wear and travel. It’s an idea that I like ”.

At the helm of the Albiceleste team – world champion in 1978 and 1986 -, Scaloni appreciated that with the biennial World Cup, the format of the South American qualifiers will also change, which are played all against all for two years.

“The matches would be accumulated in a month and the trips would be shorter. If so, I would agree as coach of the South American team, “Scaloni said in a press conference prior to Argentina’s duel against Paraguay for the qualifying rounds for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Obviously a show for the people would be great, we would see a World Cup every two years ”.

CONMEBOL and UEFA are leading the opposition to the plan and have threatened to boycott the biennial format of the World Cup, which will be put to a vote in December during the FIFA Congress.
