Linoy Ashram, Olympic champion, leaves the tapestry

The last Olympic champion in rhythmic gymnastics, the Israeli Linoy Ashram, has announced his retirement as an athlete just over a month after his 23rd birthday (May 13, 1999). Her departure from gymnastics will not be complete because she already anticipates that she will continue to be involved as a coach.

Linoy broke the Tokyo dominance of Russian gymnasts, and although she was one of the favorites Surprisingly, she overtook Dina Averina to become the first Israeli woman to win an Olympic gold medal, breaking the Russian reign that had not lost that medal since 2000: Individual rhythmic gymnastics officially entered the Olympic program at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

“Let my business card say Olympic champion, I know this trip was worth making,” Ashram said in an interview with a television program. On his way, when he is at the top and Paris 2024 is not far away, he did not hesitate: “An athlete needs to know when to retire. I have fulfilled my dream. I will continue in gymnastics, but now from the other side.” Ashram added that she will be joining her former coach Ayelet Sussman’s team.

Ashram won six silver and five bronze medals at the 2017, 2018 and 2019 world championships, and took two gold and one bronze at last year’s World Cup. He also won all-around gold at the 2020 European Championships.
