The European Throwing Cup, held in Nicosia, Cyprus, saw Liliana Cá secure a silver medal in the discus throw event with a remarkable 62.66 meters, her best mark of the season. This feat was all the more impressive given her dominance in the competition up until the fourth and antepenultimate attempt, where she alternated between throws of 62.17 and 62.66 meters, interspersed with two null attempts. However, it was Sweden’s Vanessa Kamga who ultimately claimed the top spot with a throw of 63.25 meters, the best global record of the season.
Liliana Cá, at 38 years old, concluded her participation with two more null attempts, narrowly missing the opportunity to replicate her 2021 success. She was closely followed on the podium by Germany’s Marike Steinacker, who achieved a throw of 61.57 meters. This event, which had been won by national record holder Irina Rodrigues in 2024, highlighted the intense competition and high standards in the sport.
Portugal’s team wrapped up their participation with a total of two medals, following Jessica Inchude’s repeat victory in the shot put event from 2023. This secured them 14th place in the collective classification with 19 points. On the final day of events at the GSP Stadium, national record holders Tsanko Arnaudov and Leandro Ramos finished fifth and ninth in the shot put and javelin throw, respectively, with throws of 19.86 and 77.18 meters. Décio Andrade also competed, finishing 10th in the B final of the hammer throw with a distance of 69.38 meters.
In the under-23 category, João Fernandes concluded his participation in the top 10 for the javelin throw with a distance of 67.45 meters. Mariana Camara finished in the ninth and last position in the B final of the shot put with 12.32 meters, while Catarina Flor ranked 13th in the hammer throw with 55.08 meters, the lowest record among athletes with valid attempts.
The 24th edition of the European Throwing Cup, which took place in the Cypriot capital since Saturday, featured a strong Portuguese contingent of 13 athletes, including seven seniors and six under-23 competitors. This event showcased the best of European throwing talent, with athletes pushing their limits and setting new benchmarks for the season.
