The air around top-tier football organizations can get thick with tension. Recently, a tricky situation unfolded as a new leadership team was being formed for the 2025/26 season. The big three clubs — Sporting, Benfica, and FC Porto — just couldn’t see eye to eye.
Their disagreement centered on selecting the final top-flight club to join the league’s board. It was a proper standoff, causing a real headache for everyone involved. Things got so stuck, there was even talk of drawing names out of a hat to pick the team. Imagine the drama that would have caused!
Luckily, cooler heads eventually won out. After much deliberation, Alverca was finally chosen to fill that key spot. This decision paved the way forward. Alverca will now sit alongside Sporting, Benfica, FC Porto, and Vitória Guimarães as the First Division representatives on the board.
The new leadership officially took their places this Thursday. The ceremony was held at the Arena Liga Portugal. António Saraiva, who leads the Liga’s General Assembly, oversaw the important event. The board also includes Feirense, Leixões, and Marítimo, all representing the Second Division. Rounding out the group are Reinaldo Teixeira, the Liga’s president, and Rui Caeiro, who represents the FPF. This complete team is now ready to guide the league through its next season.
