Libya: Colonel Gaddafi’s son disqualified for presidential election

Libya’s election commission has rejected the nomination papers of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of slain former leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

According to foreign media, a total of 98 candidates had filed nomination papers out of which 25 candidates including Saif-ul-Islam have been declared ineligible. However, such candidates can appeal against the decision in the court.

The ECP said it had approved a preliminary list of candidates for the presidential election, which included 73 candidates, including Khalifa Haftar, Aqila Saleh and Abdul Hameed al-Dubai.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi had submitted his nomination papers as a candidate for next month’s presidential election. It should be noted that Saif al-Islam is still being prosecuted in Libya and beyond.

The area from which Saif al-Islam has filed nomination papers is the stronghold of the Gaddafi tribe, where the Gaddafi family still enjoys popularity and some sort of protection.
