LG achieves 6G terahertz (THz) wireless data transmission and reception

LG Electronics has successfully completed 6G THz wireless transmission and reception over 100 meters in an outdoor environment. This milestone was reached on July 13th in collaboration with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the largest applied research laboratory in Europe, and the data traveled through the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) and the Berlin Institute of Technology in Germany.

One of the biggest challenges in the evolution of 6G wireless has been the need for power amplification to generate a stable signal at ultra-wideband frequencies. The power amplifier developed by LG and Fraunhofer HHI and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) was crucial to the success of this latest test.

The power amplifier is capable of generating a stable signal output of up to 15dBm in the 155 to 175 GHz frequency range. LG was also able to demonstrate adaptive beamforming technology that changes the signal direction according to changes in position channel and receiver plus high-gain switching antenna combines output signals from various power amplifiers and transmits them to specific antennas.

With global standards set by 2025 and commercialization within four years, 6G networks will be able to support faster wireless transmission and low-latency, high-reliability communication speeds. 6G will be a key component of the Ambiente de Tudo Internet, the emerging technology that aims to improve living and business environments, making them more responsive, adaptable, autonomous and personalized to the needs of consumers, recognizing human presence and preferences.

LG Electronics is a leader in protecting critical 6G technologies through a series of pioneering initiatives. In 2019, LG established the LG-KAIST 6G Research Center in partnership with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, the country’s leading university and research center.

Earlier this year, LG and KAIST brought Keysight Technologies Inc. wireless telecommunications test and measurement equipment to take their collaboration to a new level. In June, LG was elected to chair the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) to promote leadership in 6G mobile technology over the next decade (and beyond) in North America.

“The success of this trial demonstrates that we are moving ever closer to successfully applying the terahertz radio communication spectrum in the next 6G era,” said Dr. IP Park, President and CTO of LG Electronics. “Our successful partnerships with local and global institutions and research organizations to promote the development of 6G capabilities have been very rewarding.”
