Leylah Fernández wants to reach the Top 10 in 2022

Leylah Fernández said Thursday that she has ambitions to break through among the 10 women in the world next year, win one of the great tournaments and play doubles with her sister Bianca.

The 19-year-old Canadian became a sensation and a crowd favorite when she surprisingly reached the final of the US Open, where she fell to Britain’s Emma Raducanu, in early September.

Speaking to the Ecuadorian television network Teleamazonas, Fernández reviewed his 2021 season.

“I am very happy that at the US Open I was able to obtain good results and reach the top 30 in the world, closer to my goal,” said the current number 26 in the WTA ranking.

“By 2022, my dad (Jorge) and I have talked that I want to reach the Top 10,” he added. “I hope that on that road I can reach more Grand Slam finals, win a WTA 1000 and have other good results.”

Fernández is visiting the port city of Guayaquil to support his younger sister Bianca, who competes in an ITF youth tournament.

Regarding the reception in Ecuador, he stressed that “it is incredible, I don’t know how to express the emotions that I have now of the affection, of the Ecuadorian people, I am very happy to be here and that gives me more motivation to work harder and to play well in the tennis court with the best attitude and represent Ecuador in the best way ”.
