Less beer? Mexico’s possible solution to water scarcity

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, raised the possibility that the breweries in the north of the country stop producing in the face of the emergency due to lack of water in the area.

The Mexican leader thus announced that the concessions will be reviewed and incentives will be given for them to settle in the south of the country, where there is enough water that would allow them to maintain production levels, most of which is destined for export.

López Obrador thus highlighted the agreement that was reached at the time with the Constellation Brands brewery in Mexicali, where the permit was revoked because water for domestic use was even endangered. Based on a consultation with the population, an agreement was promoted that the company accepted to relocate to the south of the country.

“We have to do something similar and seek not to leave the breweries without permission. Mexico is the country that produces the most beer in the world. Investment, foreign exchange, because beer is being exported,” said López Obrador, according to the Mexican press.

The Mexican president has explained that “it is not to say that we are no longer going to produce beer, (but) that beer is not going to be produced in the north.”

The president said that it is not possible to reach the extreme that was reached in La Laguna, with the production of milk, where due to the scarcity of water, deeper wells were dug, where there is water with arsenic and now plants are necessary to eliminate this mineral from the Water.
