Leones win again, this time against the Indians

The Leones de Santo Domingo achieved their sixth victory of the LNB Super League season, this time 83-71 over the Indios de San Francisco de Macorís in the game held at the Mario Ortega pavilion.

Jean Carlos Quezada led the Leones with 15 points (9-7 from the field) and 10 rebounds, followed by 12 points and 7 boards from Leandro Cabrera. Jayson Valdez and Diego Colón had 11 points each and Kevin Pérez 9, for a team of Leones who have won three in a row and now have a 6-2 record.

For the Indians, who now have a 4-4 record, Nehemías Morillo scored 13 points, Yan Carlos Rodríguez contributed 12 with 7 rebounds, and JD Miller had 11 points and 9 sacks. Carlos Pepín and Luismal Ferreiras added 7 in scoring and 8 boards each.

The first quarter was dominated 21-14 by the Leones, who had their top scorer of the quarter with 7 points in Quezada, the same amount achieved by Carlos Pepín for the Indians.

A 13-2 rally completed by a basket by Pérez gave the Leones an 18 (34-16) lead with 7:01 remaining in the second quarter. The Indians couldn’t do much the rest of the way and the first half trailed 44-28.

Pérez and David Peguero scored 8 points each to lead the Leones at halftime. Quezada contributed 7 goals. Miller, with 8 points and Pepín with 7 led the Indians.

The Leones were up by 20 points (62-42) with 2:50 left to finish the third half, after a dunk by Juan Pablo Montás A triple by Colón with 33 seconds to go left the score 69-48 after three periods.

A shot by Yeikson Montero completed a 9-0 run for the Indians, who closed to 57-69 with 8:02 left in the final quarter. However, those led by Julio Duquela did not lose focus and with a layup from Colón with 3:07 left, the Reds’ advantage extended to 16 (79-63). The winners never looked back.

The sets concluded 21-14, 23-14, 25-20 and 23-14 for the Lions.
