A familiar face is stepping into a new role on the sidelines for V. Guimarães. Head coach Luís Pinto recently welcomed Leonel Olímpio as his latest assistant. Olímpio is no stranger to the club or its fans.
The former V. Guimarães player has been quietly rising through the coaching ranks. Before this promotion, he was an integral part of Gil Lameiras’ technical staff. That team plays in Liga 3, nurturing future talent for the club.
Olímpio’s journey as a coach with V. Guimarães began in 2019. This was right after he hung up his boots, finishing his playing days at U. Leiria. He first worked with the youth academy players. Later, he moved on to coach the women’s team. His most recent stop was with the B team. Now, he’ll be directly under Luís Pinto’s guidance, a significant step up.
His return to the first-team dugout marks a special moment. He now joins Douglas Jesus, a former teammate, among the club’s coaching staff. This move comes after Rui Cunha left the club last summer to join Nantes. It shows a commitment to bringing former players back into the fold.
