León Mayor Backs Provincial Autonomy

León’s mayor, José Antonio Diez, has expressed support for autonomy for the province of León, describing it as “the ideal one.” He also left the door open to a union with Asturias, stating that it would be “historically justified.” However, he acknowledged that autonomy for the former Leonese Region “seems practically impossible” due to the lack of support, especially in Zamora and Salamanca.

After the León Provincial Council approved a motion in favor of the autonomy of the Leonese Region, Diez emphasized the importance of determining the path forward to ensure the success of the initiative. He stated that achieving autonomy for the region “in accordance with the procedures required” seems impossible.

Diez also criticized the PSOE, accusing them of being “cynical” and “persecuting” him after he approved the motion in the León City Council four and a half years ago. He asked what steps the PSOE would take to address the issue and demanded to know what the party’s general secretary would do.

Oscar Puente, the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, was also criticized by Diez, who accused him of being “completely unaware of the issue” and having a “centralist vision” of the Community’s functioning.

Diez expressed his willingness to accept a debate with Puente, but suggested that the minister may not be eager to engage in a discussion, as he would need to present solid arguments and evidence to support his claims.
