Leica launches a new smartphone, but only in a select market

The well-known Leica brand launches its second smartphone, the Leitz Phone 2, but only in a selected market.

As with the previous model, Leica is making the model, intended for photography (of course), available only in Japan.

Leica also has a smartphone in its product portfolio. Or rather, today it even has two models, as it launches its Leitz Phone 2, which succeeds the previous model.

And if the predecessor was only available in black, the Leitz Phone 2 is only available in white! Another peculiarity of the design is that the engraved Leica mark does not appear anywhere on the model. The model has the word Leitz engraved on the rear panel and on the camera ring.

It even runs Android 12 OS under a custom Leica interface.

Inside the Leitz Phone 2 is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor paired with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. In theory, these specs translate to powerful performance, despite the overheating issues associated with this Qualcomm chip.

Being a Leica smartphone, as it should be, the Leitz Phone 2 arrives destined for photography with a 47.2 megapixel sensor with an inch in size. This is complemented by a two megapixel depth sensor.

In a statement, Leica explains that “Leitz Phone 2’s proprietary software engine brings the typical ‘Leica look’ to smartphone photography. Create Leitz looks based on the three iconic M lenses: the Summilux 28 for commanding shots taken in the thick of the action; the Summilux 35 for everyday and street art photography; and the Noctilux 50, for portraits with its extremely high 1.2 aperture, capturing photos with Leica bokeh”.

Furthermore, the new Leitz Phone 2 also features a 6.6-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2730×1260 pixels and a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits.

It is already available in the Japanese market for an approximate price of 1,530 euros.
