Today is National Pizza Day! And for us, this is the perfect time to start the countdown to Bitcoin Pizza Day. We contacted New York Pizza to celebrate this day and give away legendary pizzas (once worth 10,000 Bitcoins) for your bizarre crypto story. But first: Why are pizza and crypto inextricably linked?
2 pizzas worth 400 million euros in Bitcoin
Today we celebrate the existence of the flat Italian dish in the Netherlands. Pizza is one of those meals you reach for when you don’t feel like cooking or just want to eat something delicious. You call New York Pizza and before you know it (usually within 30 minutes) the courier is at your door.
Now you’re probably thinking; What does National Pizza Day mean for crypto? There are a lot of them, namely 400 million euros. Believe it or not, pizza is an important symbol in cryptocurrency. On May 22nd we are even hosting a real “Bitcoin Pizza Day”. On May 22, 2010, American programmer Laszlo Hanyecz bought two pizzas with Bitcoin (BTC).
Laszlo paid a ridiculous 10,000 Bitcoins for this at the time. That was worth about $41 at the time. However, today these 10,000 Bitcoins are worth more than 400 million euros. May 22nd has officially been declared Bitcoin Pizza Day.
Together with New York Pizza we are counting down from National Pizza Day to Bitcoin Pizza Day. To celebrate, there are two pizzas to be won every month, for which Laszlo once paid 10,000 Bitcoin.
Laszlo’s pizza purchase ultimately went down in history as the first real Bitcoin transaction in the real world. On May 22nd, we celebrate the tremendous progress Bitcoin has made since then, with pizza as a symbol of that starting point.
What is your crypto story?
The fact that Laszlo once paid 10,000 Bitcoins for two pizzas will still keep him awake every now and then. But over the years, the use of Bitcoin to buy things has increased significantly. In short, there are many examples of people who once used Bitcoin to buy something that would have been worth a fortune today.
The powerful stories, the stories you brag about or maybe feel a little ashamed of: what could have been.
This story is worth two legendary pizzas. Have you ever paid for your purchases with one of those flashy crypto payment cards or bought Bitcoin in 2010 and sold it in 2012 and it wasn’t a good plan? We want to know.
