Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai says the Taliban did not conquer the Afghan capital but were invited to enter Kabul.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Hamid Karzai said that after President Ashraf Ghani’s hasty escape, the Taliban were invited to enter the capital to save the country from any disturbance.

Hamid Karzai said that when Ashraf Ghani escaped, his security officials also left and when he asked Defense Minister Bismillah Khan if he was also about to leave Kabul and which government When the official was in Kabul, it was discovered that none of them remained in Kabul until the Kabul police chief left the city.

He said that on the morning of August 15, when the draft terms of the transfer of power were being finalized, there was growing unrest in the capital and rumors were circulating that the Taliban had taken power. When contacted, it was revealed that the Taliban would not enter the city.

Hamid Karzai said that the Taliban called me in the afternoon to say that the government remained in office and that they had no intention of entering the city but at 2:45 pm they found out. It so happened that Ashraf Ghani has fled the city. “I tried to contact the then defense minister, interior minister and Kabul police chief, but all the officials had left the city at that time,” he said.

Former President Hamid Karzai said that at that time an official in charge of Ashraf Ghani’s security called and asked him to come to the presidential palace and assume the presidency but I refused saying that legally I have no one to sit in this position. The truth does not reach.

Hamid Karzai believes that if Ashraf Ghani had been in Kabul, the issue of a peaceful transition period would have been settled, which we were preparing for, because the next morning we were going to Doha where the Taliban were waiting for us to finalize matters.

To address the current crisis, Hamid Karzai suggested that a traditional Loya Jirga be convened, comprising all Afghans, including women, to decide on a representative government, constitution and national flag.

Hamid Karzai said that the world should keep in touch with the Taliban because Afghanistan needs to move forward. He added that at this time it is also important that the people of Afghanistan cooperate with the government in any case.

He said that it is not true that at present women and girls are not allowed to go out of the house without mahram in Afghanistan because girls and women are seen on the streets and this is the real situation on the ground. Hamid Karzai added that he considers the Taliban to be Afghans and that they, like all Afghans, have been facing a difficult situation for the past 40 years.
