Leaders will address the present and future of Ibero-America in Santo Domingo

The heads of State and Government of Ibero-America will meet in Santo Domingo in March to address the present and future of the region, with special attention to food security, the environment and equity.

All Dominican Republic prepares for the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit to be held on March 24 and 25, 2023postponed from the date of celebration initially scheduled for November of this year and the first completely face-to-face since the covid-19 pandemic (the one in Andorra in 2021 was in a hybrid format).

It will be a meeting focused on two major themes, equity and sustainability, as reflected in the motto of the meeting: "Together for a fair and sustainable Ibero-America".

Special attention will be paid to the fight against the climate crisis, equitable access to health for the almost 600 million inhabitants of Ibero-America, public policies that guarantee greater opportunities and put an end to economic and social imbalances, gender equality, food security (60 million people suffer from it in the region), sustainable economic development or energy transition.

In view of this appointment at the highest level, in recent months there have been successive events in the Dominican Republic -a country that holds the Pro Tempore Secretariat of the Ibero-American Conferencesectoral meetings at the ministerial level to prepare the documents that will be presented to the leaders of the region.

Specifically, the heads of State and Government will have on the table an Ibero-American Environmental Charter and an Ibero-American Charter of Digital Rights, the latter proposal worked on by the countries of the community based on an initial approach from Spain.

Two other documents are the one that bears the title "Critical Path to Achieve Inclusive and Sustainable Food Security in Ibero-America" and a Financial Architecture Proposal, on which the foreign ministers of the area worked on at their last meeting, in November.

In addition to the meeting of foreign ministers, the XXXVIII Ibero-American Conference of Education Managers took place in Santo Domingo in November, in which the challenges in the matter were addressed, with an eye toward achieving equality and inclusion in education systems.

Also the XI Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum in which a more equitable financial architecture was requested to face challenges such as hunger, poverty, the climate crisis and inequality.

Previously, the ministers of the Environment, Agriculture or Higher Education met in the country and now, between January and February, it will be the turn of those responsible for Gender and Tourism, among other meetings.

Finally, on March 24, the foreign ministers will meet, one day before the heads of state and/or government of Ibero-America meet.

This meeting in Santo Domingo is presented as very inclusiveafter the US host vetoed the presence of the leaders of Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua at the Summit of the Americas last June in Los Angeles.
