Laxman Utekar, the director behind the superhit film “Chhaava”, has hit back at Anurag Kashyap’s statement that cinema is dying. In a recent conversation with the YouTube channel MAMa Couch, Utekar responded to Kashyap’s comments, saying “it’s not that the audience doesn’t understand his films, but rather he doesn’t understand the audience’s taste.”
Utekar pointed out that films like “Baahubali”, “RRR”, and “Pushpa” have done incredibly well at the box office, raking in hundreds of crores. He even mentioned his own film “Chhaava”, starring Vicky Kaushal, as an example of a successful movie. “These films show that cinema is not dying,” he said.
Utekar also emphasized the need for filmmakers to update their sensibilities and not stay stuck in the past. Today’s audiences are more informed and updated about films, thanks to the cinema being available on their phones. With the film industry changing every three years, filmmakers need to adapt and evolve to keep up with the times. They can’t just blame the audience for not understanding their work and stay rooted in the past.
As a filmmaker, Utekar believes it’s essential to be open to change and willing to learn from the audience. By doing so, filmmakers can create content that resonates with the public and helps the film industry thrive. Utekar’s comments come as a response to Kashyap’s recent statement that he’s leaving Mumbai and that Bollywood has become toxic, with cinema dying as a result.
