Landslide in Nigeria: Death toll rises to 42

A total of 42 people died and 15 survived at collapse of a skyscraper under construction in Lagos, the economic capital of NigeriaThe governor reported this Sunday, giving a new balance of the accident that occurred last Monday. “We have counted a total of 42 bodies,” declared Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The tragedy occurred at a construction site, a 21-story building located in the Ikoyi district.

“Many workers are trapped in the rubble”Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, director general of the state emergency affairs agency, said Monday.

The cause of the collapse has not been determined, but the authorities have ordered an investigation.

Building collapses are common in Africa’s most populous country, where millions live in dilapidated properties and building regulations are routinely ignored.
