Lando Norris trusts McLaren to fight for victories and sack Verstappen

Lando Norris, who was recently rehired by McLaren, is confident that the team will fight for race wins alongside Max Verstappen in 2024. However, the British driver believes he will have to wait a little longer to challenge for a championship. Following a technical change that came into force last season, McLaren went from fighting for points to regularly fighting for podium places.

Norris has followed in Piastri’s footsteps and has now agreed to a “multi-year” extension, thereby expressing his conviction McLaren has “everything we need” to get back to the top of the sport. “Am I confident that I can do it? Yes. Am I confident that the team is capable of this? Yes,” Norris said.

Norris came close several times to claiming McLaren’s first Grand Prix victory since 2021, taking six second places, while his teammate Oscar Piastri triumphed in the Qatar Sprint race.

McLaren’s challenge and Norris’ perspective

Norris, who is tied to McLaren for the foreseeable future, believes the team is getting closer to winning the race. Although fighting for the championship is a bigger step, the driver feels they are closer than ever since he joined the team. “If you ask me if I think I can win races this year, I would be more inclined to say yes,” Norris said, although he admitted that Racing and winning a championship is a whole different level.

“Are we ready to challenge them? Yes, absolutely,” said Norris, referring to teams like Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes. McLaren’s expectations for 2024 are high and Norris feels ready to compete against drivers of the caliber of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

The future of McLaren and the target for 2026

McLaren hopes to continue to gain momentum and get closer to competing for the championship. Norris mentioned that 2026 represents an opportunity for everyone on the grid with the implementation of new regulations. The key question is how the team will perform this year, which could provide a better perspective on its championship chances in the near future.

Meanwhile, McLaren is preparing to unveil its new F1 challenger at Silverstone on February 14, with Norris and Piastri driving the MCL38. With Norris competing against rivals such as Max Verstappen, the 2024 season promises to be exciting for McLaren and its fans.
