Lakshya Sen to become a young Indian to qualify for the World Tour Finals

New Delhi. India’s Lakshya Sen will become the youngest badminton player in the country to qualify for the season’s HSBC BWF World Tour finals to be held in Bali, Indonesia, starting on December 1. 20-year-old Lakshya from Almora has had an impressive career on the BWF World Tour and currently ranks fifth in the World Tour standings. He will compete with Kidambi Srikanth (third) in the World Tour Finals men’s singles event with two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu (fourth place) in women’s singles and Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy (sixth place) in women’s doubles.

The tournament will move from Guangzhou to Bali due to the Kovid-19 pandemic. Srikanth, Sameer Verma, Sindhu and London bronze medalist Saina Nehwal have played in the final tournament of the first season. Sindhu is the only Indian who won the BWF World Tour Finals in 2018. Saina reached the final of the BWF Superseries Finals in 2011. Srikanth and Sameer had reached the knockout stage but were unable to reach the final.

Lakshya had won five titles in 2019 before the international circuit was suspended due to Kovid-19. He reached the final of the Dubai Open and reached the semi-finals of the Denmark Masters and Hilo Open. On the Indonesian stage, Lakshya couldn’t get much further in the draw, having lost to two-time top seed and two-time world champion Kento Momota of Japan. The official list of players who have qualified for the World Tour Finals will be announced after the conclusion of the ongoing Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament in Bali.
