Lakers ditch Marc: end to his NBA career

The relationship between Marc Gasol and the Los Angeles Lakers has come to an end, according to Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN). The Angelina franchise has transferred the Spanish international to the Memphis Grizzlies along with a second round in 2024 and money in exchange for the rights to Wang Zhelin, a 27-year-old Chinese player drafted by Tennessee in the second round in 2016.

Marc’s stay in Memphis doesn’t seem like it will last long anyway. According to the American journalist, the franchise, in which he debuted in the NBA and played ten years, and the center they are going to negotiate the breaking of the contract so that Gasol remains in Spain with his family. Marc’s NBA career seems to be coming to an end with 36 years, thirteen seasons in the League and a championship ring.

Money and pivots

The trade was almost an obligation for the Lakers for economic reasons: the trade was more profitable than negotiating a buyout (an amicable termination of the contract). And after the acquisition in the summer market of the centers Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan. With them two and the minutes of Anthony Davis in the ‘five’, Marc’s participation was looming minimal.

A scenario that he already suffered last season, in which he gradually lost presence on the track: his 19.1 minutes on average were the minimum in his NBA career. Despite this, and after finishing the Olympic Games, Gasol assured that he would fulfill his year of contract for 2.7 million dollars with the Lakers.
