Knights Lose Brown And Ponga To Injury In Brutal Win Over Manly

The Newcastle Knights defeated the Manly Sea Eagles, securing a definitive 20-point verdict by the final whistle after leading 34-16 late in the second half. The Sunday victory pushes Newcastle to a 2-0 start for the 2026 NRL season. The result was strictly overshadowed by a devastating eight-minute window in the first half where the Knights lost their $2.7 million star duo to severe lower-body injuries.

In the 28th minute, superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga clutched his right hamstring while grounding the ball for a try. The score, resulting from a Bradman Best line break, gave Newcastle an 18-10 lead.

Ponga attempted to play through the pain for several subsequent plays before medical staff pulled him from the field. He was replaced by Fletcher Hunt and sent for immediate scans. Fox League sideline reporter Jake Duke officially confirmed Ponga would not return to the game.

Before his early exit, Ponga recorded 88 run metres, four tackle busts, one line break, and a try in under half an hour. The injury disrupts a highly publicized week for the 2023 Dally M medalist. Ponga recently made international headlines by formally applying to switch his representative allegiance from Australia to the New Zealand Kiwis ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

The physical toll worsened just eight minutes after Ponga departed. Marquee playmaker Dylan Brown suffered an MCL injury while setting up Hunt for a try.

Brown received on-field treatment and attempted to push through to halftime. Medical staff ultimately ruled him out for the remainder of the game, and he is expected to miss significant time.

Brown’s absence is a massive blow to the Newcastle roster. He recently joined the Knights on a historic 10-year, $13 million mega-deal from the Parramatta Eels. The club is already operating with a depleted backline, missing Fletcher Sharpe due to a knee injury sustained previously in Las Vegas.

Despite losing their two primary playmakers, Newcastle maintained their composure to close out the blowout victory. The win solidifies a massive turnaround from their recent struggles in professional sports. Conversely, the defeat heaps immediate pressure on Manly coach Anthony Seibold following back-to-back losses to open the year.
