New Delhi. Starter Lokesh Rahul will be the vice-captain of the Indian team in the three-round series against South Africa from December 26. The BCCI made this announcement through a tweet on Saturday. Rohit Sharma was named Virat Kohli’s successor for the series, but was dropped from the Test series due to a hamstring strain. Rahul has played 40 tests so far. The 29-year-old has scored 2,321 runs in this format averaging 35.16 with the help of six centuries. Rahul is being seen as the future Indian captain.

“KL Rahul has been appointed vice-captain of the test team for the South Africa series. KL Rahul will replace Rohit Sharma as the vice-captain, who is out of the test series due to a hamstring injury.” wrote the BCCI. in a tweet.

PTI-language reported on December 13 that Rahul was the favorite in the race for vice-captaincy. It will take at least three to four weeks for them to recover from this.

It would have been difficult for the selectors to relinquish this responsibility to Rahane, as his place in the game XI is not confirmed. With this, it is too early for Rishabh Pant to be promoted as the vice captain of the national team. Rahul is currently one of the few specialist hitters who plays in all formats. Rahul’s age and experience also work in his favor, who can take the reins of the team for a long time after Kohli. Rahul is also expected to be named vice-captain in the limited overs format in the coming days. His name for the captain of the new Indian Premier League franchise in Lucknow is also being discussed.
