The official cause of death for Ace Frehley, co-founder and guitarist of Kiss, has been determined. Frehley died from a stroke and a subdural hematoma, which resulted from a fractured skull. His death was classified as accidental.
An autopsy report obtained by TMZ revealed these details on Monday, November 10. Frehley was 74 years old at the time of his passing.
His death was confirmed on October 16. He had recently suffered a fall at his home in Morristown, New Jersey, and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.
Frehley’s family expressed their devastation in a statement. They noted they were "completely devastated and heartbroken" and were fortunate to "surround him with words, thoughts, prayers and intentions full of love, caring and peace."
The statement highlighted the "epic" magnitude of his departure. It emphasized that his memory would "live forever" as they reflected on his "incredible achievements."
John Ostrosky, Frehley’s representative, also shared his sorrow with Us. Ostrosky stated that "Space Ace" had been his "Superman" since 1976. He credited Frehley’s "kindness, caring and inclination to mentor" as influences that will "live with me forever."
In the weeks prior to his death, Frehley was hospitalized after a fall. This led to the cancellation of a September concert. The following month, he canceled the remaining tour dates for the year, citing "persistent medical issues."
Frehley co-founded Kiss in 1973 alongside Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Peter Criss. He left the band in 1982 due to creative differences.
Following his departure, Frehley formed his own group, Frehley’s Comet, and launched a solo career. He later reunited with Kiss for a reunion tour in 1996.
Kiss retired from touring in 2023. However, the band had plans to reunite for the 50th anniversary of the Kiss Army fan club in November.
Upon news of Frehley’s death, former Kiss bandmates Gene Simmons, 76, and Paul Stanley, 73, released a joint statement to The Hollywood Reporter. They stated they were "devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley."
They described Frehley as an "essential and irreplaceable member" during the band’s formative years. They affirmed he is and "always will be a part of the Kiss legacy." Their thoughts were with his estranged wife, Jeanette, and his daughter, Monique, along with all those who loved him, including fans worldwide.
Simmons also shared his grief on X. He wrote, "We are heartbroken. Ace is gone." Simmons added that "no one can match Ace’s legacy" and noted Frehley’s love for the fans.
Simmons lamented that Frehley "didn’t live long enough to be honored at the Kennedy [Center] Honors in December." He concluded by calling Frehley "the eternal rock warrior," wishing his legacy to "live forever."
Frehley is survived by his estranged wife, Jeanette Trerotola, and their 45-year-old daughter, Monique.
