Kings of Convenience Shine at Metrópolitan Theater with Unique Concert Experience

What you need to know:

Kings of Convenience returned to Mexico, giving an impressive concert at the Metropólitan Theater. The Norwegian duo, composed of Erlend Øye and Eirik Glabek Bøe, offered a unique and intimate experience, making it a truly unforgettable night for the audience.

We’re used to concerts being crowded, with people stuffed together like sardines, or if it’s in a forum with seats, we’re often standing because the person in front of us is blocking our view. However, despite having seen many bands and artists live, I had never experienced anything like seeing Kings of Convenience. Almost three years after their most recent visit to Mexico, the duo finally returned, and I was lucky enough to see them at the Metropólitan Theater – and it was well worth the wait.

In 2021, I had the chance to see Erlend Øye with The Whitest Boy Alive in the Capital Crown, but until that point, I had never seen him with Eirik Glabek Bøe, despite them having played at Bahidorá 2022 and later in CDMX and Guadalajara.

The concert at the Metropólitan Theater was a unique experience. What surprised me was when the members of Kings of Convenience appeared on stage. The atmosphere in their concerts is known to be laid-back and relaxing, and that was evident in the audience’s behavior. When the duo started playing, the mood was one of pure appreciation for their music.

Kings of Convenience gave us a different, but wonderful concert

Yes, outside the Metropólitan Theater, people were selling shirts, and inside, fans were lining up to buy beer, soda, or reach their seats. But what surprised me was when Erlend Øye and Eirik Glabek Bøe took the stage. The duo is known for creating a curious atmosphere in their concerts, and this time was no exception. When they started playing, the audience was appreciating their music, and for almost the entire first act, everyone remained seated.

This was a first for me – attending a concert where the audience was seated for almost the entire first act. Beyond the chords and riffs of the guitars or the melodies and vocal harmonies, something that left me impressed was that both Erlend and Eirik didn’t worry too much about making mistakes on stage. When they did, they accepted them, hugged them, and that made some parts of their show truly great and unrepeatable.

The importance of the public for Erlend and Eirik’s show

Another thing that caught my attention during the concert was the importance of the audience for the Norwegians and their music. The participation of the people was key to making some songs sound as they should. In songs like “Rocky Trail”, “Catholic Country”, and “Know-How”, Erlend Øye asked the audience to snap their fingers, applaud to create the accompaniment rate, and even sing to put together a huge choir, respectively. This made the attendees feel part of the show and the music.

Despite being a sold-out concert, the intimate vibe of the Metropólitan Theater allowed the Norwegians to interact more with their Mexican fans. Both Eirik Glabek Bøe and Erlend took the opportunity to joke with the audience and share funny anecdotes about their time in Mexico.

A couple of Mexican musicians accompanied Kings of Convenience on stage

Eirik mentioned during the concert that since their beginnings, the idea was to make music with just two guitars. However, they were accompanied by a couple of Mexican musicians on stage at the Metropólitan Theater. Together, they played songs like “Fever”, “Boat Behind”, “Rule My World”, and “I’d rather dance with you”, which caught the atmosphere of the show.

After a brief encore, Kings of Convenience returned to say goodbye with “24-25” and “Scars on Land”, giving a wonderful closure to one of the most spectacular concerts I’ve seen in my life. And I don’t say that because the Norwegian duo had a show full of lights, visuals, smoke, and more. I mention it because they reminded me that you can always find new ways to enjoy and appreciate music.
