King Felipe VI of Spain met today with the Ibero-American Secretary General, the Chilean Andrés Allamand, to whom he confirmed his attendance at the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit, which will take place in the Dominican Republic on March 24 and 25.

It will be the fifth high-level meeting of the Ibero-American heads of state and government that the monarch has attended since he acceded to the throne, after participating in those in Veracruz (Mexico) in 2014; Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) in 2016; Antigua (Guatemala), in 2018, and Andorra in 2021.

Allamand thanked the king "the unwavering commitment of the Spanish Crown to the Ibero-American community in the last three decades" and whoever there is confirmed your attendance, reports the Ibero-American General Secretariat (Segib) in a statement.

Felipe VI is expected to participate in the Santo Domingo summit together with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez.

The meeting with the Ibero-American Secretary General and former Chilean Foreign Minister took place at the Palacio de la Zarzuela, the official residence of the King and Queen of Spain.

It is common for the head of the Segib, whose headquarters are in Madrid, to meet with the monarch at the doors of the meeting of the heads of state and government to update him on the preparations for the Ibero-American summit.

The Secretary of State for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the World, Juan Fernández Trigo, joined the meeting.

allamand stressed "the unique opportunity" offered by the Ibero-American summit for "strengthen bi-regional relations" between the EU and Latin America, an issue that Spain will include among its priorities during its presidency of the community club, which it will hold in the second half of the year.

The summit in the Dominican Republic will take place under the motto "Together for a fair and sustainable Ibero-America", having as main topics of debate food security, the environment, digital rights and a new financial architecture, adds the note. The forum was to be held in November of last year, but it was finally postponed to March of this year.

It will be the first fully face-to-face summit since the covid-19 pandemic broke out, since the one in Andorra had a hybrid format.

The king already met with Allamand in Zarzuela in March 2022, a few weeks after he took office as Ibero-American Secretary General, replacing the Costa Rican Rebeca Grynspan.

Allamand is the third head of the Segib since the creation of this body in 2005, after the Uruguayan Enrique Iglesias, who held the position until 2014, and Grynspan, currently in charge of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development ( Unctad).
