Kikas Morais Wins Ballito Pro WSL Challenger Series Opener

The waves at Ballito are putting on a show, and for Frederico Morais, known as Kikas, it was a fantastic start. He surfed strong in the second heat of the first round at the Ballito Pro. This event is the second stop on the World Surf League’s Challenger Series. Kikas picked up a total of 10.33 points for his best two rides. One wave earned him a 5.50, and another scored 4.83. This put him ahead of Hawaii’s Luke Swanson, who also moved on with 8.36 points. Kikas also outsurfed Japan’s Daiki Tanaka and South Africa’s Luke Slijpen.

Kikas will face new challenges in the third heat of the second round. He’s set to compete against Mateus Herdy from Brazil, Levi Slawson from the United States, and Finn McGill from Hawaii. It promises to be a gripping contest.

Not every surfer had such a smooth ride, though. Another Portuguese athlete, Afonso Antunes, faced a tougher outcome. He finished third in his heat, scoring 7.00 points. This total came from two waves worth 3.60 and 3.40. Brazil’s Igor Moraes dominated that heat with a score of 14.04. The Basque surfer Yago Dominguez took second with 8.34. Antunes finished ahead of Australia’s Alister Reginato, but unfortunately, his run at Ballito ended early.

Now, the focus shifts to the women’s competition, where three Portuguese surfers are ready to hit the water. Thanks to their rankings, Teresa Bonvalot, Yolanda Hopkins, and Francisca Veselko will all enter the event in the second round. This gives them a significant advantage, skipping the initial heats.

Teresa Bonvalot will be in the third heat. She’s up against India Robinson and Sierra Kerr, both from Australia, and Nanaho Tsuzuki from Japan. Yolanda Hopkins has her own tough matchup in the fifth heat. She’ll face Keala Tomoda-Bannert of Hawaii, Eden Walla of the United States, and Anat Lelior of Israel. Keep an eye on Francisca Veselko in the eighth heat. She just won the first Challenger Series event in Newcastle, Australia. Her opponents will be Brazil’s Laura Raupp, Japan’s Minami Nonaka, and Janire Etxabarri from the Basque region.

The Challenger Series is a crucial proving ground for surfers. It’s their pathway to reach the elite Championship Tour. This event in South Africa runs until July 6. The Ballito Pro is just the second of seven stages planned for the season. One of those stops will be in Ericeira, Portugal, from September 29 to October 5.

There’s a lot on the line for these athletes. Ten spots are available for men to join the 2026 Championship Tour. For women, seven spots are up for grabs. Excitingly, the women’s Championship Tour is expanding. It will grow from 16 to 24 surfers, creating even more opportunities for these rising stars.
