Keith Urban Performs “Toxic” Relationship Song After Nicole Kidman Separation

Keith Urban performed a song about a “toxic” relationship on his CBS series, “The Road.” This performance aired shortly after his separation from Nicole Kidman was confirmed.

The 57-year-old artist closed a November 30 concert in Little Rock, Arkansas, with “Messed Up as Me.” The track is from his 2024 album, ‘High’.

Urban sang about a relationship where anger persists, lies are common, and misery seeks company. The lyrics mention falling apart internally and the struggle of being alone.

He continued, questioning if someone is as “messed up” and alone as he is. The song suggests a truth that no one truly leaves one’s thoughts, heart, or bed.

Urban previously shared the song’s meaning on Instagram in March 2024. He described it as about “two people who know they’re not good for each other.”

He called the dynamic dysfunctional, nonsensical, and potentially toxic. Yet, the pair keeps returning because they are “REALLY good” at one specific thing.

Us Weekly confirmed the separation of Kidman, 58, and Urban a month before ‘The Road’ premiered in October. They had been married for 19 years.

The couple met in 2005, following Kidman’s divorce from Tom Cruise. They married a year later.

Their family grew with daughter Sunday Rose in 2008. Two years later, they welcomed daughter Faith via surrogate. Kidman also has adopted children, Isabella and Connor, with Cruise, 63.

Kidman spoke about their extraordinary partnership in a 2019 Entertainment Tonight interview. She called herself “one of the luckiest women in the world.”

In a September 2021 Harper’s Bazaar interview, Kidman described marriage as “always working on things.” She said it is built on love, with significant give and take.

Kidman emphasized wanting the best life for Urban, with him reciprocating that sentiment. They reportedly enjoyed raising their daughters together.

She also reflected on her 2001 high-profile separation from Cruise. Kidman noted she was young then and now might be more cautious.

Still, she prefers an open approach to life, even if hurt. Urban once asked her, “How’s your heart?” and she replied, “Open.”

Urban also used ‘The Road’ to discuss the realities of life on tour. He described the ups and downs of a demanding career.

At the series premiere, he spoke of waking up alone and miserable on a tour bus at 3:30 AM. He questioned why he endures the fatigue and homesickness.

Urban concluded that the only answer is that he was “born to do this.” The show aims to discover who else is “built for this.”

‘The Road’ airs Sundays on CBS at 9:30 p.m. ET. Episodes stream afterward on Paramount+.
