Lights, camera, legal action! Bollywood powerhouse Karan Johar isn’t one to shy away from the spotlight, but he’s drawing a firm line when it comes to his personal brand. The acclaimed filmmaker has stepped up to protect his “personality rights,” seeking help from the Delhi High Court. And guess what? It looks like he’s getting the interim relief he asked for.
On a recent Wednesday, September 17, the High Court hinted strongly at granting Karan an interim injunction. This means a temporary order will be put in place to stop others from unauthorized use of his identity. He specifically wants to shield his photos, videos, and overall public image from being exploited. Think beyond just pictures – it’s about his entire persona and publicity rights. News agency PTI confirmed these developments.
Court Calls Out Online Platforms
The court isn’t messing around either. It has called out various online platforms and websites. Social media giants like Meta Platforms and others have been asked to hand over crucial subscriber information and IT logs. Why? Because Karan’s plea goes deep. He wants to stop these sites from illegally selling merchandise like mugs and T-shirts that unfairly use his name and face. He’s making it clear: profiting from his identity without permission is a no-go.
What The Court Said
Justice Manmeet PS Arora, speaking for the court on Wednesday, made it clear there will be a detailed order. The judge confirmed an injunction is coming. This interim order will cover a bunch of issues Karan raised. We’re talking about unauthorized sales of goods with his name, cases of disparagement and obscenity, misusing his domain name, and even those pesky fake profiles floating around. It’s a broad sweep to safeguard his image.
Karan’s lawsuit states that many groups are cashing in on his name, image, and unique personality symbols. They’re doing this without his consent, purely for their own financial gain. He wants that stopped, period.
Stars Standing Up For Their Rights
Karan isn’t the first star to fight this battle in court. Before him, celebrity couple Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan also sought the Delhi High Court’s protection for their personality rights. The court ruled in their favor, putting a stop to the illegal use of their names, images, and even voices. This included misuse through new tech like Artificial Intelligence (AI). It shows a growing trend of public figures asserting their control in the digital space.
